But the problem remains- the icons are all stuck to the top of the screen. I've tried messing with the settings by right-clicking the desktop (icon size, auto arrange, align to grid) but I can't get the icons to create a second row. Instead, they're all stuck to the top row and as a result they pile up over each other.

So I went and restored all the settings to normal mode but the problem was still there. However I narrowed it down and realized it was an application in the startup task manger list. I went and disabled all of them and restarted and the issue was gone. So I individually re-enabled them and found that the 'WeatherAlerts' service was the issue.

Hello. I'm having a big issue with my Windows 10 laptop. When I boot it up and log in, no desktop icons appear. Only the background. The taskbar is frozen and I cannot get task manager to open, nor can I use Win+R. I can get to the ctrl+alt+del menu but when I click on task manager it just goes back to the empty desktop and does nothing.

So we did a bit more troubleshooting and decided that Desktop Heap Exhaustion must be the cause of this issue since evertime it occurs, an event is created related to that. Unfortunately we haven't been able to find a way to examine desktop heap usage. We only found DHeapMonitor which is incompatible with Windows 10.

There is this annoying and useless icon pinned to the Windows 11 taskbar that I cannot figure out how to remove. This is done a different way in Windows 11 but still easy.
